The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development have stressed the need for food importers to know the regulations that apply to specific products and more general rules concerning labelling and additives. Minister of State for Agriculture Heineken Lokpobiri in a stakeholder’s consultative meeting on illegal importation of food item into Nigeria spoke strongly on the importance to curb illegal importation as chemicals used for preservation are harmful for human consumption.

So much has been said about the ways some food items including imported chickens, turkeys and others are been preserved with harmful preservatives. This much is again been stressed at meeting and a warning going out to importers to comply with regulations of policies which if flaunted will bring about a serious action by the enforcement authorities.

The menace of smuggling has to be looked into following the discovery of over eleven million tonnes if Nigerian per boiled rice in Benin waiting to be imported back into the country.
