Welcome to our live updates on the Kaduna State local government elections. A unique feature of today’s local government elections in the 23 local government areas of the state is the adoption of electronic voting for the polls. The elections had initially been scheduled to take place in December 2017, but they were postponed in October, to allow the state House of Assembly to amend portions of the electoral law to allow for e-voting.

After resolving that, the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission announced on February 9, 2018, that the elections would now take place today. Despite assurances by Kad-SIECOM and Governor Nasir El-Rufai that the elections would be free and fair, many of the opposition parties in the state are unhappy with arrangements and security measures in place.

On Friday, 31 political parties withdrew from the elections. The Peoples Democratic Party, however, declined to align with the other opposition parties and called on its supporters to participate in the exercise.

Accreditation and voting are expected to take place between 8 am and 4 pm, in all 5,100 polling units across the 23 local government areas of the state. The distribution of voting materials from the local government levels to the polling units started as early as 6am.
