LIVE UPDATES: Rescheduled Ekiti APC Governorship Primary

Ekiti-APC-Primaries-1-1

Welcome to our live updates on the Ekiti State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election. The election which initially took place on Saturday, May 5, was rescheduled after the exercise was allegedly disrupted by hoodlums. While the Chairman of the Governorship Primary Election Committee, Governor Tanko Al-makura, condemned last week’s exercise, he expressed hope for a better and more peaceful repeat.

Following the cancellation of the primary, and consultations by APC leaders and the aspirants, the party fixed Friday, May 11 for the primary. On Thursday, the party shifted it again by a day, to Saturday after further consultations between the APC National Working Committee (NWC), aspirants and other stakeholders, its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Bolaji Abdullahi, said in a statement. The process has now commenced with accreditation of delegates amid heavy security presence. Also, the committee chairman is on ground to ensure a smooth process.

32 candidates are currently in the running for the Ekiti APC governorship primary. They were initially 33 until the Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on political matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, who was under the Ekiti Central Senatorial District, withdrew. He announced his decision on Thursday while addressing reporters in Ado Ekiti, the state capital. Senator Ojudu explained that he took the decision for the sake of peace in the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC). Following the initial election which ended inconclusively last weekend, the presidential aide said he was withdrawing since the race had turned violent and messy. Ojudu, however, declined to announce his support for any of the remaining 32 aspirants.
