Syria’s ally Iran says “fighting terrorism” in Idlib province will continue, amid fears of a major government offensive there. President Hassan Rouhani said civilians must not be made to suffer. He was speaking at a summit in Tehran with Russian and Turkish leaders.

There are fears of a bloodbath if a large-scale battle breaks out in Idlib, Syrian rebels’ last major stronghold. New air strikes on rebel positions were reported on Friday morning.

Earlier, the new US envoy for Syria said there was “evidence” that Syrian government forces were preparing to use chemical weapons.
