The former governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, died from multiple organs failure following complications from coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. The Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, Professor Akin Abayomi, confirmed this via his verified Twitter handle on Friday.

He revealed that Senator Ajimobi died on Thursday at a private facility in Lagos approved by the state government to offer COVID-19 treatment. Professor Abayomi condoled with the family of the late former governor and the people of Oyo State.

Senator Ajimobi, who died aged 70, was a two-term governor of Oyo State – the first person to occupy the seat twice and in succession. It was rumoured last week that he had passed on, but his Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy, Bolaji Tunji, dismissed the reports in a statement.

The news of the former governor’s death on Thursday was confirmed by aides and some family members, as well as elder statesmen and political bigwigs in the country.
