For the Super Falcons, qualifying for the next phase of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) is non-negotiable. While Nigeria started the competition on a shaky note after the defeat to debutants Malawi, against the Cleopatras of Egypt, the 10-time champions have another opportunity to avert disaster and write their names into women’s football folklore.
Justine Madugu’s side have three points from two games, and only a win against the North Africans can guarantee the football powerhouse a place in the 2026 WAFCON quarter-finals. Of course, history favours the champions, having bashed Egypt 6-0 in their only meeting at the WAFCON in 1998. But Nigeria must take care not to underestimate their opponents.
Three Things Nigeria Should Do Vs Egypt In 2026 WAFCON
Ahead of the must-win encounter, here are three key things Nigeria should do when the Super Falcons file out against Egypt.
Tactical Flexibility
Those who saw the match against Zambia must have had palpitations when Tosin Demehin was sent off after a straight red card for hauling down Barbra Banda. But Madugu reacted swiftly, swapping Christy Ucheibe of Benfica from her midfield position into the heart of the Nigerian defence. That tactical switch proved to be a masterstroke as the Super Falcons limited Zambia’s attacking firepower.
With Demehin out against Egypt, the same level of tactical flexibility is expected of the team, especially factoring in how crucial the match is for Nigeria. Like Michelle Alozie being deployed as a left back, moving from her natural right back position, the Super Falcons must continue to show tactical flexibility as they battle the Cleopatras.
